Instrument Services
The Central Electronics Centre (CEC) provides comprehensive servicing and maintenance support for electronic instruments and systems used across the various Departments and Centres of IIT Madras. Unlike conventional service centres, CEC is equipped with specialised infrastructure to address a wide spectrum of instrumentation — from standard power supplies to highly complex industrial controllers and data acquisition systems.
A key strength of the Instrument Services division lies in its ability to handle servicing challenges even in the absence of circuit diagrams or manufacturer-provided documentation. Through in-depth circuit tracing, fault isolation, and functional analysis, the Centre has successfully restored a broad array of sophisticated equipment to operational standards.
With deep expertise and advanced diagnostic tools, CEC restores even the most complex instrumentation—often without relying on original documentation or OEM spares.
The scope of servicing includes test and measuring instruments, biomedical and chemical parameter monitoring systems, process control equipment, PLCs, CNC machine controllers, and PC-based measurement systems. CEC also extends field service support to industries, offering on-site diagnostic and repair assistance for process instrumentation and electronic control systems.
In cases where original spare components are unavailable, the Centre has consistently demonstrated the ability to redesign and substitute modules to maintain functional compatibility — a testament to its technical versatility and design proficiency.
The Instrument Services facility is equipped with a wide array of advanced diagnostic and testing tools, including Arbitrary Waveform Generators, Mixed Signal Functional Test Systems, Digital Storage Oscilloscopes, Signature Multimeters, SMD Rework Stations, and more — enabling precision diagnostics and efficient restoration of equipment.
