IIT Madras Launches India’s First Mobile Medical Devices Calibration Facility

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched India’s first ‘Medical Devices Calibration Facility on Wheels,’ a pioneering initiative under its ‘Anaivarukkum IITM’ (IITM for All) program. The facility was inaugurated on 15th April 2024 by Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, in the presence of senior faculty members and students.

This first-of-its-kind mobile facility is designed to ensure the accurate calibration of critical medical devices, a cornerstone for precise diagnosis and effective treatment. Developed by the Central Electronics Centre (CEC) at IIT Madras, the mobile unit is equipped with state-of-the-art testing systems to evaluate the safety and performance of medical devices in compliance with international standards.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Prof. V. Kamakoti emphasized,

“Proper diagnosis and treatment are extremely important and for that the medical devices need to be calibrated accurately and frequently. This effort not only reduces the cost of calibration but also the transportation cost and time required.”

By delivering high-quality calibration services directly to hospitals and healthcare centres—including rural and remote areas—this mobile facility promotes accessible, affordable, and scalable healthcare solutions. It also supports the objectives of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3, which advocates for health and well-being for all.

This initiative marks a significant stride in strengthening India’s healthcare infrastructure through innovation, accessibility, and quality assurance.
